Artist's Statement
I am an Illustrator with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Illustration from Rochester Institute of Technology as of May 2023.
I would describe what I do as mischievous, cartoon-like, naturalistic illustration, with goofy and odd characters. As for my method of working, it usually depends on how strongly I feel about my ideas at the start of a project. If I am unsure of where to start I will do word associations to try and find an appealing idea. Then, I will do several thumbnail sketches with multiple variants of a few ideas. After, I choose my most successful thumbnails for my idea and do slightly more thorough sketches of them. Most of the time, I will take my sketches and re-draw them again digitally in order to work out the composition and values. Following that, I choose what sketch is working the best, and then I work on color palettes to use for the project, choose the most successful one, and continue to flesh out the project whether it is traditional or digital.
I work mostly digitally for its portability, and wide versatility. Working in watercolor gives me a sense of spontaneity, and freedom that cannot be found anywhere else. Together, they make the perfect mediums for me to make my odd, yet familiar characters that can comfort viewers. I appreciate the structured yet textured impact they have on my work, pairing them with naturalistic color palettes for a warm feeling. With whatever I do, I strive to make it something I can be proud of, and for others to thoroughly enjoy.
